Mermaids: Ecocritical and Feminist Perspectives

When: 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 28
Where: Downtown Eugene Public Library, 10th & Olive streets
Details: Dorothee Ostmeier and Ethan Wyman of the University of Oregon lead a theoretical and illustrated tour of the mermaid figure from antiquity (Homer, Ovid) to contemporary popular culture (Splash, Ponyo, The Lure). They will discuss the ways in which hybridized, fluid mermaid bodies challenge norms, including the dualism between nature and culture, male and female, animal and human, drawing on works that include Judith Butler’s “Bodies that Matter,” Timothy Morton’s “Ecology without Nature,” and de la Motte Fouqué’s “Undine.”
